Hunter Email Verification for HubSpot

Install the Hunter Email Verification app for HubSpot, verify a contact's email from the record, and verify many contacts with a workflow.

Hunter Email Verification is a free HubSpot app. It verifies the email addresses of your HubSpot contacts with Hunter's Email Verifier and saves the result on each contact.

This guide explains how to install the app, verify one contact from the contact record, and verify many contacts with a workflow.

What the app does

Once installed, you can:

  • Verify the email address of a contact from the Hunter Email Verification card on the contact record

  • Verify many contacts at a time with the Verify email with Hunter workflow action

  • Use the result in lists, workflows, lead scoring and reports, from three contact properties

The app never creates contacts. It never adds, changes or deletes an email address. It reads the address that is already on the contact, and it writes a verification status.

Before you start

  • You need a Hunter account. If you do not have one, the install asks you to sign up. A Free plan is enough.

  • You must be an admin of your Hunter team.

  • In HubSpot, you need permission to install apps and to customize contact records. A Super Admin has both.

Step 1: Install the app

  1. Click Install on the HubSpot Marketplace listing, or go to https://hunter.io/integrations/hubspot_verify/install.

  2. Log in to Hunter. If you are new to Hunter, sign up first. The install continues after the sign-up.

  3. Choose the HubSpot account to connect.

  4. Review the permissions, then click Connect app.

Hunter opens its Integrations page. A HubSpot Email Verification card shows your connected HubSpot account.

👉 Under Optional, keep This includes workflows selected. The workflow action needs this permission. If the checkbox is locked, see the troubleshooting section below on the workflows permission.

Step 2: Add the card to your contact records

HubSpot does not add an app card to your records automatically. Add it one time for each record view.

  1. In HubSpot, open any contact.

  2. Click Customize above the middle column.

  3. Click the view that you want to edit, for example Default view.

  4. In the middle column, click + where you want the card.

  5. Click the Card library tab, then search for Hunter.

  6. Click Add card next to Hunter Email Verification.

  7. Click Save and exit.

HubSpot's guide has more detail: Customize the middle column of records.

Step 3: Verify a contact's email address

  1. Open a contact that has an email address.

  2. In the Hunter Email Verification card, click Verify email address.

The card shows the result and the date of the check.

To check the address again later, click Verify again.

What each result means

Result

Meaning

Valid

The address passed every check Hunter runs and is safe to use. A small share of Valid addresses can still bounce, because a mailbox can change at any time after it is checked.

Accept-all

The domain accepts mail for every address, so no tool can fully confirm that this mailbox exists. Check the Confidence Score and prioritise addresses above 85.

Disposable

The address uses a temporary email service.

Invalid

The address cannot receive email. Do not send to it.

Unknown

The mail server did not give a clear answer. You are not charged.

The Confidence Score (0 to 100) shows how likely Hunter thinks the address is to be valid. It is most useful on Accept-all and Unknown results, where the status alone does not confirm the mailbox.

Where the results are saved

Each verification saves the result in three contact properties, in the Hunter Email Verification property group:

Property

Value

Hunter email status

Valid, Accept all, Webmail, Disposable, Invalid or Unknown

Hunter email score

0 to 100

Hunter email verified at

The date and time of the check

Webmail means the address is at a consumer email provider such as Gmail, Yahoo or Outlook.com. Hunter can verify these addresses like any other.

👉 The Hunter email status property is written as Accept all, while the card displays Accept-all. They mean the same thing. If you filter a list or branch a workflow on the property, use the property's spelling.

You can use these properties like any other HubSpot property. For example:

  • Build a list that leaves out contacts with the status Invalid.

  • Add Hunter email score to your lead scoring.

  • Send only Valid contacts to your sales team.

👉 If someone changes the contact's email address, the card hides the old result. Verify the new address to get a new result.

Step 4: Verify many contacts with a workflow

Use the Verify email with Hunter action to verify contacts in bulk. For example, verify a list, or verify each new contact as it enters HubSpot.

  1. In HubSpot, go to Automation > Workflows.

  2. Create a contact-based workflow, or open an existing one.

  3. Set the trigger. For example, "Contact is created", "Contact is added to a list", or a manual enrollment.

  4. Click + to add an action, then search for Verify email with Hunter.

  5. Under Hunter Email Verification, click Verify email with Hunter.

  6. Keep Target record set to Enrolled contact, then click Save.

  7. Review the workflow and turn it on.

For each enrolled contact, the action saves the result in the three Hunter properties. The action also returns the result as outputs: status, score, verified_at and message. Use these outputs in later steps, for example in a branch on status.

Other values of the status output

Sometimes Hunter cannot verify the address. The action then returns one of these statuses, and the contact continues in the workflow:

Status

Meaning

no_email

The contact has no email address.

invalid_email

The address is not in a valid email format.

not_verifiable

Hunter cannot process this address. Treat it as unverified.

quota_exhausted

Your Hunter team has no credits left for the current period.

unknown with a "did not finish in time" message

The check took too long. You are not charged. Enroll the contact again to retry.

Credits

Verifications run on your Hunter team's shared credits, the same pool you use everywhere else in Hunter.

  • A verification costs 0.5 credits on All-in-One plans, and 1 credit on Data Platform plans.

  • The Free plan includes 50 credits a month. Spent only on verification, that covers up to 100 verifications. The same credits also pay for Domain Search and Email Finder at 1 credit each, so how many verifications you get depends on what else you use Hunter for. Paid plans include more — see Hunter pricing.

  • Unknown results are not charged.

  • Verifying the same address again is free within a window that depends on your plan: the same billing period on a monthly All-in-One plan, and the same calendar month on a yearly All-in-One plan or a Data Platform plan. Outside that window it costs credits again. The window is shared across your team, so if a teammate already verified the address, you are not charged either.

Troubleshooting

The workflows permission is locked

On the install screen, the This includes workflows checkbox can show a lock and this message: "This permission is disabled for this app by an admin."

A HubSpot Super Admin can turn the permission on:

  1. In HubSpot, click the settings icon.

  2. Go to Integrations > Connected Apps, then open the Approved apps tab.

  3. Click Manage access next to Hunter Email Verification.

  4. Open the Data Permissions tab.

  5. Under Optional, turn on This includes workflows, then save.

The action is not in the workflow editor

  • Make sure that the workflow is contact-based. The action works on contacts only.

  • Make sure that the app has the workflows permission. If not, follow the steps above on the locked workflows permission.

The card is not on my contact records

Add the card to each record view that your team uses. See Step 2 above.

A note on the other Hunter app

Hunter has a second HubSpot app, HubSpot integration, which syncs your Hunter leads into HubSpot as contacts. It is a separate app with a separate install. See HubSpot integration.

Uninstall the app

  1. In HubSpot, go to Settings > Integrations > Connected Apps.

  2. Click Actions next to Hunter Email Verification, then click Uninstall.

Uninstalling removes Hunter's access to your HubSpot account. The Hunter properties already saved on your contacts stay in HubSpot.

To sum things up

  • Install the app, then add the Hunter Email Verification card to your contact records.

  • Click Verify email address on a contact, or use the Verify email with Hunter workflow action to verify many contacts.

  • The results go to three contact properties that you can use in lists, workflows and lead scoring.
