Add a custom tracking domain to your email sequences

How to enable a custom domain to track emails sent with Hunter

By default, tracking links in your emails (for opens, clicks, and unsubscribe) point to a Hunter-managed domain.

If you're on a Growth plan or above, you can set up a custom tracking domain, which lets you replace this with your own subdomain (e.g., track.yourdomain.com), giving you more control over your deliverability and brand.

💡 There can only be one tracking domain per team.

This is one of several steps to optimize your deliverability. See also:

Why set up a custom tracking domain?

  • Improved deliverability: Whether your emails land in the inbox depends partly on the reputation of the domains used in your links. A custom tracking domain gives you full control over that reputation.

  • Lower risk of getting blocklisted: It separates your tracking links from those of other Hunter users, so their sending behavior won't affect your domain.

  • Brand consistency: Recipients see your domain in links instead of a third-party one, which looks more professional and trustworthy.

What you'll need

  • A subdomain dedicated to tracking (e.g., track.yourdomain.com)

  • Access to your DNS provider

  • Access to a Growth plan or above (Scale or Enterprise)

  • No existing custom tracking domain.

How to set it up

You only need to add one DNS record, a CNAME, to verify and activate your custom tracking domain. See the step-by-step guide below:

Step 1 - Add your subdomain in Hunter

  • Go to Sequences Settings and find the custom domain section.

  • Enter the subdomain you want to use (e.g., track.yourdomain.com)

  • Click Set this custom domain.

  • Hunter will generate the CNAME record you need to add, copy the name and value shown.

This may take a few minutes. You can wait, come back later, or click the refresh link to check early (once per minute).

Step 2 - Add a CNAME record in your DNS provider

  • Go to your DNS provider and create a CNAME record using the name and value Hunter provides.

  • Set the TTL as low as possible (usually 1 minute) to speed up verification.

  • Wait for the verification to complete, or use the refresh button in Hunter. DNS changes can take some time to propagate.

Step 3 - You're done

Once verified, all emails sent through Email Sequences will use your custom tracking domain for open tracking, click tracking, and unsubscribe links.

You can increase the TTL in your DNS provider back to a higher value for better performance.

💡 To remove or change your custom domain: Click the delete link in Hunter's settings, then remove the CNAME record from your DNS provider.

Registrar-specific setup

The exact steps to add a CNAME record vary slightly by DNS provider. Find your registrar below.

Namecheap

Log in to your Namecheap account, head to your Domain List section, and click "Manage" next to your domain. Then click "Advanced DNS", and in the "Host Records" section, click "Add new record":

  • Type: select "CNAME Record"

  • Host: the NAME from Hunter's Sequences Settings (e.g. track)

  • Value: the VALUE from Hunter (e.g. hunterproxy.com.)

  • TTL: 1 minute while setting up, then increase it afterwards

Save the changes, and wait until Hunter picks up the change — this should take less than 5 minutes, or use the refresh link in Hunter to check early.

GoDaddy

Log in to your GoDaddy account, head to your Domain section, and click "Manage DNS" next to your domain. Then click "Add New Record":

  • Type: select "CNAME"

  • Name: the NAME from Hunter's Sequences Settings (e.g. tracking)

  • Value: the VALUE from Hunter (e.g. hunterproxy.com.)

  • TTL: Custom → 600 seconds (the lowest value GoDaddy allows) while setting up, then increase it afterwards

Save the changes, and wait until Hunter picks up the change — this should take around 10 minutes, or use the refresh link in Hunter to check early.

Squarespace

Log in to your Squarespace account, head to your Domains section, click your purchased domain, and press "Manage Domain Settings". Then click "Edit DNS", and in the Custom Records section, click "Add Record":

  • Host: the NAME from Hunter's Sequences Settings (e.g. tracking)

  • Type: select "CNAME"

  • Data: the VALUE from Hunter (e.g. hunterproxy.com.)

Save the changes, and wait until Hunter picks up the change — this should take a few minutes, or use the refresh link in Hunter to check early.

What custom tracking looks like in Email Sequences

Once you've activated your custom tracking domain, any links inserted in your sequences will use your own domain rather than one of Hunter's domains to track their performance. This includes the links used to track if a recipient opens your emails, the links you insert in your emails, and the unsubscribe link.
