Tracking open or link click rate for email sequences

All Hunter users can track when their emails get opened.

How Hunter tracks email open rates

When "Track email opens" is enabled for a sequence, a unique tracking pixel is added to every email within that sequence. When the recipient opens the email, Hunter automatically logs an open event, letting you know when and how many times each recipient opened the email.

💡Tracking email opens is included in a free plan - link clicks tracking is only available on an all-in-one paid plan.

How Hunter tracks link clicks

When the "Track link clicks" option is enabled from the Settings tab inside your email sequence, Hunter will track when and how many times a recipient clicks on a link included in your email.

Note: We can’t detect which specific link was clicked. If multiple links are included in the email, we’ll only track the overall click rate.

How open and click rates are calculated

Open rate and click rate are calculated at the recipient level, not the message level:

  • They reflect the percentage of people you contacted who opened or clicked your emails, not how many times emails were opened or clicked in total.

  • If the same recipient opens multiple emails in your sequence, they still count as one unique opener.

  • Example: if you contact 100 people and 20 of them open at least one of your emails, your open rate is 20%, regardless of how many times each person opened.

How to enable/disable the tracking

When you launch a new sequence, open and link tracking are disabled by default.

To enable tracking for email opens and link clicks, go to the Settings tab of your email sequence and toggle the tracking option on.

Open and link tracking consent in Hunter.io Sequences

When you enable open tracking, Hunter adds a small, invisible tracking pixel to your sequence emails. When the pixel loads, the email is recorded as opened.

🔒 Who gets tracked also depends on your workspace's tracking consent mode (Opt-out by default) and on each recipient's choice. Every tracked email includes a link that lets recipients allow or turn off tracking, and Hunter stops tracking anyone who turns it off. Recipients who aren't tracked still count toward your open and click rates.

Knowing who has opened or clicked links in your emails

After the emails in your sequence are sent, here's where you can check who opened or clicked:

  • Emails tab (inside the sequence) — the number next to "Opened" (e.g. "Opened ¡ 1") shows how many times that recipient opened that specific email step.

  • Engagement section — shows total opens per recipient across all steps.

  • Leads page — open a recipient's profile for a detailed breakdown, including each individual open event and exactly when it happened.

💡 If your email includes a BCC, open tracking will also track when the BCC recipient opens the email.

Track the open rate or link click rate of an email sequence

You can find open and click rate data in different sections:

  • Sequence overview: in the performance section. The "eye icon" shows the open rate. If it's not present, it means the email was not tracked.

  • Statistics tab: a more detailed breakdown of opens, with link clicks shown using a finger icon.

💡 If some recipients turned off tracking, or your workspace uses Opt-in, fewer opens and clicks are recorded. Those recipients still count as contacted, so your rates can look lower.

  • All Sequences dashboard: open rate, click rate, and other data points for each sequence.

  • Engagement tab: the number of unique opens per recipient.

💡 If you’re interested in more detailed reporting, you can access the Reporting section within Sequences. There, you’ll find various filters, detailed reports of your email sequences, and options to export your data.

What Hunter tracking doesn't cover

Hunter's open and click tracking only applies to emails sent through your sequences. There are a few things it doesn't do:

  • Check whether an inbox is active or capable of receiving emails — that's what email verification is for (a separate feature).

  • Track whether a contact has opened or clicked emails sent outside of Hunter (e.g. from your CRM, Gmail, or another tool).

  • Confirm email delivery or detect bounces in real time — bounce data is available in sequence statistics after sending.

  • Track replies — Hunter detects when a recipient replies and pauses the sequence, but reply tracking is separate from open and click tracking.

If you need to verify whether an email address is valid and likely to receive emails, use Hunter's Email Verifier before adding contacts to a sequence.
