How does Hunter find email addresses?

Learn where Hunter gets email addresses, how found and inferred emails differ, how they're verified, and how to remove your data.

Hunter finds email addresses by crawling the public web, and infers others from the public data available for a domain. Every email in Domain Search shows where and when Hunter found it.

Where Hunter gets email addresses

Hunter uses only publicly available information. It crawls about 30 million web pages every day and keeps an index of more than 650 million public sources and 150 million professional email addresses. For more detail, see Our data.

Found and inferred emails

Hunter shows how each email address got into its index:

  • Found: the address appears on a public web page.

  • Inferred: Hunter worked out the address from the public data available for that domain.

See the sources for an email

  1. Reveal an email address in Domain Search.

  2. Click the arrow next to the source count.

Each source shows where and when Hunter found the email. Inferred addresses carry an "Inferred" tag.

👉 In Email Finder, the result also tells you whether it's a guess or has public sources.

How Hunter verifies emails

  • Domain Search: most emails show their last verification status (Valid, Accept-all or Unknown) at no extra cost. To check one in real time, click "Verify email address". Each check uses 0.5 credit. See all possible verification statuses.

  • Email Finder: every email it returns is already verified.

  • Saved leads: on paid plans, Hunter re-verifies your saved leads every month at no extra cost. Learn how Automatic Leads Verification works.

How Hunter keeps data current

Hunter crawls the web every day. When a source can no longer be found online, Hunter labels it "Removed". After six months, Hunter deletes contact or company information that no longer has a public source.

Remove your data or block the crawler

  • Remove an email address: anyone can claim their email address. The owner can edit the fields linked to it. If they delete it, Hunter removes the email address and all related data.

  • Block the crawler: Hunter's crawler follows the robots.txt standard, so website owners can disallow it. Find its user agent on Hunter's crawler page.
