Add a custom tracking domain in Email Sequences

How to enable a custom domain to track emails sent with Hunter

Updated over a week ago

By default, tracking links in your emails (for opens, clicks, and unsubscribe) point to a Hunter-managed domain.

A custom tracking domain lets you replace this with your own subdomain (e.g., track.yourdomain.com), giving you more control over your deliverability and brand.

This is one of several steps to optimize your deliverability. See also:

Why set up a custom tracking domain?

  • Improved deliverability: Whether your emails land in the inbox depends partly on the reputation of the domains used in your links. A custom tracking domain gives you full control over that reputation.

  • Lower risk of getting blocklisted: It separates your tracking links from those of other Hunter users, so their sending behavior won't affect your domain.

  • Brand consistency: Recipients see your domain in links instead of a third-party one, which looks more professional and trustworthy.

What you'll need

  • A subdomain dedicated to tracking (e.g., track.yourdomain.com)

  • Access to your DNS provider

How to set it up

Step 1 — Add your subdomain in Hunter

Go to Sequences Settings and find the custom domain section. Enter the subdomain you want to use (e.g., track.yourdomain.com) and click Set this custom domain.

Hunter will generate a verification key.

This may take a few minutes — you can wait, come back later, or click the refresh link to check early (once per minute).

Step 2 — Add a TXT record in your DNS provider

Go to your DNS provider and create a TXT record using the details Hunter provides.

Set the TTL as low as possible (usually 1 minute) to speed up verification.

Wait for the verification to complete, or use the refresh button in Hunter. DNS changes can take some time to propagate.

Step 3 — Switch to a CNAME record

Once the TXT record is verified, edit the DNS record you just created:

  • Change the record type to CNAME

  • Update the name (copy from Hunter's instruction page)

  • Update the value (copy from Hunter's instruction page)

Wait for the page to update or use the refresh link.

Step 4 — You're done

Once verified, all emails sent through Email Sequences will use your custom tracking domain for open tracking, click tracking, and unsubscribe links.

You can increase the TTL in your DNS provider back to a higher value for better performance.

To remove or change your custom domain: Click the delete link in Hunter's settings, then remove the CNAME record from your DNS provider.

Registrar-specific guides

A custom tracking domain needs to be set both in Hunter and in your domain registrar platform. If you are using one of the following registrars, we have dedicated step-by-step guides for them:
